We need vertical development

“Vertical development” relates to our ability to discern our own limited thinking patterns and perceptions, and our ability to release them. When this happens, we can really start to relate to and collaborate with others in the world around us.

For years, we have mainly been exercising our horizontal skills, i.e. the various skills we need in order to do our jobs in the best way. These may refer to debating techniques, managing difficult conversations, constructive coaching, effective communication, etc.

Vertical development is about growing as a human being and as a business. It is about increasing human capacity and releasing resources in order to achieve a higher level of capacity, which in turn enables us to take our horizontal skills to new levels. We do not grow vertically by adding more horizontal skills, nor do we grow vertically by imagining or pondering this growth. In order to grow vertically, we need to be aware of our own underlying driving forces and what drives others. Growing vertically requires us to involve body, heart and head in the process – i.e. our three main intelligences.

At Leadership 9.0, all our work with organizations and their leaders and teams is aimed at vertical development.
